LEILA

PRETTY LEILA, the WHOLE STORY

This lovely lady is about 5 and a half years old. She's up in Sedona and the kind hearted Good Samaritans who rescued her were not able to get much history, so most of what we know is 2nd hand.

They were told that "Grandma" got her from someone else about 3 years ago, however, Grandma was now having health issues and was forced to move in with daughter to an apartment that does not permit large dogs. No info on the previous owner.

Leila was immediately taken to the vet for vaccinations and wellness exam as she was morbidly obese. Clearly she had little to no exercise or much human interaction and lacked socialization. Despite what she missed out on, she is calm, obedient, friendly, and a very quick study. She is down 20lbs so far and has just a few left to go. Needless to say, since the weight loss, she's a different, much more active, high energy gal.

Her foster folks have fostered many GSDs while working in conjunction with a rescue in Washington state where they had a summer home, but they have not been involved with things like evaluations, dog intros, training, socializing, etc.

We have been in constant contact, tutoring, guiding and addressing questions for Leila's very dedicated and eager-to-learn foster couple as well as Leila herself. Job one began with walking, which confirmed her lack of socialization, leash-work, or formal training, so we went from there. She now knows her basics (sit, down, come, not sure about "stay" yet) and learned "heel" in a snap. Michael usually walks her a few times every day and it's a lot more enjoyable now.

PRACTICING HER OBEDIENCE WITH HER FOSTER DAD MICHAEL

Michael and Joyce didn't have much experience with dog on dog intros, and have 2 GSDs of their own so Leila and one of their males have been separated and not permitted to interact; Leila has her own quarters which for us meant progress could not be made, along with some isolation for the dogs, so that's where we are now.

ON THE MOVE

Leila and Wolfie are now given time to be free in the house together and are doing fine, not bosum buddies just yet, but will get there. Leila mostly ignores their other male, but does fine with and interacts with other's dogs at the leashed dog park near their home, her favorite friend is a Greyhound.

HAPPY TO BE GOING TO MEET HER K9 FRIENDS

LOOKING FOR BURIED TREASURE

We think that Leila was somewhat "sensory deprived" as in the case of an outside dog. They often lack a lot of human interaction and touching. She is very sweet but doesn't cuddle much. The good news, we know from experience, is that when such dogs have their person with whom they can bond, they experience a whole new affectionate world. It is so rewarding to witness that transition.

WAITING FOR HER PIANO LESSON...OKAY, IT WAS DINNER

We don't know about kids and cats yet, we never know about cats for sure without an actual 'cat test' but my gut says Leila should be a perfect playmate for kids over 6 or 7 years old. Once bonded she will be some lucky someone's loving and loyal companion.

When ready she will be shown by appointment in the Phoenix area. Spayed, vaccinated, if not yet chipped, will be, housebroken and knows her basics. German Shepherd or training experience a plus but not required.

Adoption fee $200.00.
