REUNITED WITH OWNERLOST DOG BEHAVIOR
CLICK FOR INFORMATIONI HAVE FOUND A LOOSE OR STRAY GERMAN SHEPHERD
Here are some things you should be aware of BEFORE you contact us.
- We are not a shelter or kennel. All of the dogs in our rescue are fostered in private homes. Before we can place a dog in someone's home, we must see and evaluate the dog (for temperament and health). Some of our foster homes have children or other pets, so we must know if placing a strange dog (off the streets) in that home is safe. We must also have an available foster home.
- We will be happy to work with you and ultimately try to foster and re-home strays, however, we are seldom able to take possession of stray dogs immediately. It takes time to evaluate the dog then find suitable living quarters and we always have a wait list. We get calls on strays almost daily.
- We allow 10 business days for an owner to claim their dog before placing them up for adoption. During that initial two week period, we will jointly endeavor to locate the owner, in addition to finding an appropriate foster home.
- We also cannot come out and attempt to catch a dog that is running loose. The dog must be confined and have a safe place to stay before we can offer assistance. If you are not able to catch the dog, contact Animal Control:
- It would be helpful if you could Email us a photo so that we may respond to any calls as well as verify that this is, in fact, a German Shepherd Dog
FOR WHITES, PLEASE Email Nancy at WhiteGSDRescue@aol.com
FOR ALL OTHERS, PLEASE Email Steff at SWGSDRESCUE@aol.com
STEPS TO FINDING DOG'S OWNER
1. Contact us and we will post the dog on our site's "Lost & Found." We will need the date and location found, description of dog and your contact info.
2. POST FLYERS--most dogs are found within a one mile radius of where they lived. Fearful or skittish dogs travel greater distances. Flyers are very effective. Post notices at Petsmart, Petco local vets and the AZ Republic offers free Lost & Found ads--check the “Lost” ads.
A word of caution: When posting flyers, placing ads or listing on web sites, DO NOT include a photo or detailed description of the found dog. Such information is appropriate for a "LOST" DOG, BUT NOT ONE YOU HAVE FOUND.
Include only: "Found: adult (or puppy) male (or female) German Shepherd, in vicinity of_______ and the date." Use your cell rather than home phone number.
Anyone who is actively looking for their lost GSD should be able to describe their dog to YOU. They can tell you if he/she was wearing a collar and the type or color, they can give you the dog's name to which he/she should respond. Any other identifying markings or characteristics (neutered, scar on nose, has 3 white toes, one floppy ear, coloring, etc.) should be provided by the owner.
3. Post dog as "found" on the sites recommended below.
4. Take dog to vet or bring to us (Deer Valley area) to be scanned for a microchip.
5. Post the dog as "found" on:

PLEASE NOTE: Keep in mind that while there is always a risk of disease, owners searching shelters for their lost dog cannot find them if you have the dog in your home. If you cannot house the dog for any length of time, you can take it to Maricopa County Animal Care & Control and ask that the dog be placed on a “HOLD and NOTIFY” in which case you will be notified if not claimed after 72 hours and, hopefully, before the dog might be euthanized, you will then be given the opportunity to take the dog back.
I LOST MY GERMAN SHEPHERD
STEPS TO TAKE AND PLACES TO LOOKTake the same steps as above:
- POST FLYERS WITH PHOTOS
- FAX FLYER TO LOCAL VETS & EMERGENCY CLINICS
- CHECK “FOUND” ADS IN AZ REPUBLIC & CRAIG’S LIST
- LIST YOUR DOG AS “LOST” ON THE SITE’S ABOVE AND ALSO CHECK THE “FOUND” LISTINGS…YOU WILL NOT ALWAYS GET A MATCH WHEN ENTERING A LOST DOG.
- CALL THE HUMANE SOCIETY’S FIELD OPERATIONS OFFICE; YOUR DOG MIGHT HAVE BEEN PICKED UP BY THEIR EMT UNITS IF FOUND INJURED: 602-997-7585 Ext. 2073
CHECK ALL SHELTERS – MCACC EAST and WEST SIDE and HUMANE SOCIETY—YOU MUST PHYSICALLY GO THERE EVERY OTHER DAY
IN THE EVENT THAT YOU ARE EITHER IN POSSESSION OF AN INJURED STRAY OR HAVE WITNESSED AN INJURY TO A DOG WITH NO APPARENT OWNER, the ARIZONA HUMANE SOCIETY at 13th Avenue and Hatcher WILL ACCEPT AND TREAT SUCH DOGS.
In addition, in September 2002, the AHS launched its Emergency Animal Medical Technician (EAMT) program. Certified EAMTs can provide life-saving medical treatment to sick, injured or abused animals in the field. These “animal paramedics” respond to animal emergencies and remain in radio contact with a staff veterinarian. Not all jurisdictions are covered however.
To request an ambulance for a sick or injured stray animal or animal in distress, call their Field Operations department at (602) 997-7585, Ext. 2073, or visit their web site at www.azhumane.org
