SCOUT

Could you move away and leave this sweet face behind? Well, that's exactly what happened to Scout -- his family moved away and left him and his dog pal, Patch, behind, locked in their yard with very little food or water. Thankfully, they had good neighbors.

We first heard about Scout on July 20th from Suzette, a neighbor of the family who had abandoned these dogs. According to Suzette, Scout is about 6 or 7 years old, has been raised around and is very good with kids. He's a laid back boy with a very gentle nature. Suzette had hoped that we could come and remove Scout from the property, but unfortunately we are not permitted to do that. The Humane Society was notified and the dogs were picked up and moved to safety.

Scout in his yard before rescue

The evaluation of Scout: Dog was soft and friendly in the kennel, showing no signs of kennel stress. In the room he was friendly, seeking attention and readily coming over to the handler. He tolerated the paw and mouth check with no resistance and remained friendly with the handler. When introduced to the other dog he was a little stiff at first (some hair standing on end), but greeted the other dog appropriately. With resources and people, he would not leave the food bowl, but handler could safely take. With resources and dogs, he just continued to eat. Overall friendly and no arousal seen. Brought the dog back into eval room, the dog did fine until handler went to touch the bad ear. The dog lip curled but did become submissive with handler.

On July 28th, we were notified that Scout was in need of rescue.

One of our Boot Camp attendees and former foster moms, Erica, went to visit Scout at the Humane Society today: Scout is a VERY nice boy. He is soft to the touch. He seems well-socialized, well-mannered and very smart. He did fine on the leash. The paperwork seemed to indicate that he'd lived with other dogs and I believe children. He showed no reaction to the other dogs as he walked past them in the shelter. The only reason I could see that he wouldn't be automatically moved to the adoption floor is that he has what seems to be an ear infection and Dr. E said he tends to get a little snarly around that ear which shouldn't be surprising. He's probably in pain. Otherwise he seems to be an outstanding dog.

Thanks to Erica for these wonderful photos

Scout is being neutered and his infected ear treated by the vet at the Humane Society, after which it is hoped that we can find a foster for him so that his life can be saved. If you can provide a foster or foster-to-adopt home for this deserving boy, please email Nancy ASAP at the email address below.

Scout's time at the Humane Society is up on Sunday. He needs out! Can you help him?

UPDATE 8/1: Scout was pulled from the Humane Society today and transported to Mesa. Thanks to Trish and Shannon for opening up their home to welcome this needy boy and giving him a place to rest his head for a few days while we search for a foster or permanent home for him.

Before we microchipped Scout, we scanned him and, even though the Humane Society had not found one, we found a microchip! We traced it back to a clinic in Missouri (puppy mill territory). We checked again with the neighbor (who had lived next door to Scout since he was a puppy) and she confirmed that the family had purchaed Scout as a very small puppy from a local pet store and had paid a lot of money for him. Funny how he was worth so much to this family as a puppy, and not even worth a second thought before they drove away and left him as an adult. Thankfully, this is one puppy mill puppy who is in safe hands.

UPDATE 8/5: A call from our temporary foster this morning reported that Scout is not feeling well. He hasn't eaten, and for some reason is reluctant to lie down. Since it's impossible for us to make a long distance diagnosis, thanks to volunteer Laura, Scout is being picked up and is on his way to see Dr. Yocham in south Phoenix.

Scout saw Dr. Y this afternoon. He was given some fluids for dehydration and some injectable antibiotics and sent home with one of our staff members. His spirits were good and he wagged his tail at our staff member when he saw her. Once home, he curled up on a blanket in front of the TV and allowed himself to be tempted with cheese and hot dogs as he watched "Ice Age" on TV with the rest of the family. Please check back for new photos and updates.

Mmmmm, cheese!

If nothing else, Scout hasn't lost his sense of humor -- that's his foster mom's sofa he's sitting on!!

Scout's vet visits were an unexpected drain on our finances and we sure could use your help in the way of donations. Once we get Scout back on the right track, he will need a place to go. Do you have room for this sweet, loving boy?

UPDATE 8/10: Scout saw our vet today, and the news was all good. He's eating and drinking normally, very little congestion remaining in his lungs and his temperature is normal. We'll have the results of the bloodwork by the end of the week. It was Dr. H's opinion that Scout had been hit with a whopping case of kennel cough, and could have had a touch of pneumonia for good measure. But, Scout is well on his way to recovery and is feeling much better. He'll be seeing the vet again in about 3 weeks to have his ear flushed out again, just to make sure the antibiotics are doing their job.

Scout enjoys popcorn and a movie from his favorite chair

Movie's over, can we go for a walk now?

UPDATE 8/17: The results of the bloodwork are in, and the news is all good. NO valley fever and NO tick fever! Scout is still on a precautionary 2 week round of antibiotics, after which he will see Dr. H for a checkup to make sure that things are going as planned and that he's gaining back the weight that he lost during his illness. Atta boy, Scout!
