| We received a call about an abandoned GSD in Stanfield, AZ...out in the boonies west of Casa Grande. He had been scavenging for weeks, getting thinner by the day and was limping. We advised the caller that if she could catch and hold him
we would come and get him. But alas, he was nowhere to be found. About half an hour later, guess who reappeared?
Through the combined efforts of his Good Samaritan Chris and our Tucson staff, "Sam" found himself safely ensconced in the air conditioned comfort of his foster home in Tucson, just hours later. Thanks Chris!
He will be checked out and once deemed healthy, neutered, and vaccinated. So far, he never met a stranger; just wags his happy and grateful tail for what ever and whomever approaches him. Please check back on Sam's progress and his new beginnings. UPDATE 6/28: Sam's wound has healed nicely. We're anxious to get him fostered in Phoenix as soon as possible so that we can get it X-rayed and give him a good once over. He's currently fostered with a vet tech and appears not to have any health issues. His teeth have been slightly damaged by what appears to have been chain link or similar metal. It's obvious that his life, so far, has not been real comfortable. Sam met a female GSD today, off property, and was very exuberant and playful. His eagerness to interact with her was a little too much for this particular dog but would be fine with a more confident gal. He has ignored the kitty in his foster home but because he was at large for so long, we're going to test him face to face with one. UPDATE 7/23: Sam arrived in Phoenix yesterday and has moved in with his new parents Ben & Erin and their female GSD Dakota, who still hasn't decided whether or not she likes the idea. He's been a good boy with the kitty and loves the pool. Stay tuned as we learn more about Sam, get him vetted and find out if Dakota is willing to share her folks. SAM AT HOME...he's moved in, and
wasted no time taking over the pool and couch
UPDATE: Sam's folks have decided that he has too much energy for their calm kitty so we need a foster or foster to adopt for him immediately. We would like to keep him in Phoenix so that we can get him ready for his forever home or we'll have to return him to Tucson. If you are interested in fostering Sam, please read about OUR FOSTER PROGRAM and submit a Foster Application (found on the Foster Program page). Sam is just a big overgrown puppy and a scaredy cat that's running away is a great new toy to play with. Unfortunately he's way bigger than the the scared kitty. There's a good possibility that Sam would do fine with just ONE confident and agile cat with claws. For the time being, however, no cats would be a lot easier. UPDATE 7/29: Sam is back with his Tucson foster and was delighted to be reunited with his play pal Shellie. We would still like to get him back in Phoenix where he can be shown more easily. Sam has a super temperament; not an ounce of aggression. His only issue has been his acceptance of being crated. He had been roaming free for a very long time prior to rescue so he will Houdini his way out of a crate after any extended period of time. His new family will need to patiently and gradually give him house privileges until he is known to be trustworthy when left loose. Another female companion will likely help in that regard. This will be more easily accomplished with someone who is home a good deal of the time. Other than that, Sam is an affectionate, very people oriented youngster and a wonderful companion. He does well with other dogs and isn't much more than a year old, so a basic obedience class will be part of his future. UPDATE 8/14: Sam has recovered from his neuter surgery. He's a very endearing soul who never met stranger. His enthusiasm is boundless; it's now time for humans to teach him about commitment. UPDATE 9/11: Sam & Shellie have joined at the hip; they are almost always seen together and play with one another all day. Sam is a mushpot; very kissy face. Shellie is more independent..will check in for a hug then move on. They balance one another nicely. Since Sam isn't fond of being alone, having his main squeeze Shellie around when his humans are not will likely help in that regard. The challenge, however, is that training wise they're both a blank slate, so getting that done will take more work and commitment as well as time. If we can find the right humans, their foster Mom thinks they would make a wonderful pair! Or, if someone is willing to foster them together (would need to be an otherwise dogless home) in Phoenix, we would have more opportunities to work with and show both of them. Anyone out there ready and willing to take on two high energy fun filled youngsters? Adoption fee $295.00.
