PEARL

Pearl is currently in a Las Vegas Shelter. She was on the "E" list today, but has thankfully been spared. She is due to be spayed on Tuesday, and after that, her fate is unknown. She has a ride to Phoenix next Thursday, but unless we find a foster home for her, she will not be able to make the trip.

What we know so far is that Pearl is about 7 years old and was dropped off at the shelter when her owner "went back to school." It always boggles our minds that going back to school can come as such a surprise to some owners that they must surrender their devoted companions to a high kill shelter!

UPDATE 1/31: Thanks to our good friends Becky & Phil, Pearl was bailed out of the shelter and is currently with Dr Sanjay Verma at Companion Animal Hospital receiving much needed care and attention.

UPDATE 2/2: Dr V's staff put an e-collar on Pearl and dosed her up with some good pain meds and washed her up as best they could. At 7 years, a spay is not quite as easy as with the younger gals. Pearl got some time out of her e-collar and had a blast out in the yard at Dr Verma's today. She is hand shy, but warms up quickly...she seems to like Phil better. Everyone at the vet's office loves her spends time with her. She wants to be loved but not sure how.

UPDATE 2/8:Pearl was checked out of the vet's today; the staff was sad to see her leave. She is pretty vocal in the car, but we'll make sure she gets more chances to go for rides (we believe she hasn't had too many in her life). She was introduced to all of the kids at her temporary foster home. Lacey and Mike, the GSDs, are happy to have a cousin with white hair and welcomed her into the pack as did Ty and Nick, the Dobermans. Our other foster, Rosie, who we believe to have some terrier in her (hence nickname Terrorist), wasn't quiet so happy! (jealous). Pearl's foster dad is convinced that Pearl has lived outside as she prefers to be outside and is afraid to come in, but with the help of her fur brothers and sisters, she is getting the hang of things. She is still somewhat hand shy but warms up quickly.

Pearl has discovered the toy box!

UPDATE 2/19: Pearl's foster dad has had Pearl out all day and she and Rosie have been playing! Pearl is really starting to come out of her shell and being more playful and fitting in. She's starting to want to be out of her crate more than in it...she usually she retreats to the crate when she comes in from outside but now she wants to stay out. Progress, slow but sure.

UPDATE 2/24: Pearl's nemesis, Rosie, went to her new home yesterday so now Pearl is allowed to be out in the house a little more. The house is still a very scary place to her but it's getting better. She is glued to her foster dad (we think her former owner must have been a man). Her foster parents have been taking her for walks and she does okay on the leash but could use some basic obedience which they are working on. She finally did a sit for them! Every time she comes out of her crate, she runs to the toy box and grabs a toy to take outside with her and most of the time she has a toy in her mouth...always looking for somebody to play with her. She protests about going in her crate more than she did before, but her foster parents consider that to be progress because before she only wanted to be in her crate. However, once she's in she will settle down after a few minutes and she sleeps through the night without a peep.

UPDATE 2/26: According to foster mom Becky, Pearl has discovered the guinea pigs. She doesn't quite know what to make of small furry things that live in a cage, but as you can see, she's completely facinated by them.

Please check back for updates. We need a foster home for her so that we can bring her to Phoenix. Do you have room for one more?

Pearl hid her new toy monkey today...can you find it?

UPDATE 3/3: FOSTER UPDATE: I know this may sound trivial but for us it's big steps for Pearl...she has now decided to start coming upstairs with us and being a member of the pack! Normally she will stay downstairs and watch the guinea pigs and just hang out but since Saturday, she has started to seek us out when we are upstairs and she brings her toys and sits with all of us and hangs out. That is huge! She is still somewhat aggressive about the dogs going near her crate and especially if there is food in there, but it is so much better than it was. Phil is doing a great job with her obedience and leash training...she even sits now for her treats and walks very nice on a leash. She is a fun dog.

UPDATE 3/6: Pretty Pearl thinks watching guinea pigs is better than television or the movies!

UPDATE 3/9: Pearl got a new monkey today...

...and she immediately inducted him into the "Garden Club"

The Easter Bunny Cometh...and Pearl is ready for him!

FOSTER MOM UPDATE 3/23: Pearl is such a good girl. I literally put her to bed at 8 pm with a little snack and she goes right in, sleeps till about 6-7 am. Phil lets her out to potty at 2 am when he gets home but not a whimper out of her. Great dog.

Mr. Sleepy (monkey) arrives home from The Dollar Store and within minutes, he's gutted and pronounced dead. Doesn't Pearl look proud of herself? We can't figure out why she continues to bury Happy and Grumpy (monkey), and yet Sleepy died a very quick and violent death...

Last night while Ty was at the vet, I got on the bed with Mom and slept with her until 1 am when Dad came home. I never sleep on the bed, but why not? There was room! I stretched out full length and Mom says I was snoring! What is snoring?

Pearl says, "With my new toy, I can do the PetsMart commercials!"

NEWS FLASH!:: Mr. Grumpy has been missing for several weeks and was found today at the residence of Ms. Pearl Gang. He lost both his left arm and leg and was covered in grease (because Ms. Pearl had stuffed his body into the wheel well of a 34 foot motor home located at her residence in Las Vegas, NV). It is presumed that Ms. Pearl snuck under the motor home when her foster dad wasn't looking and stuffed Mr. Grumpy between the tandem wheels and the brake line of the huge rig. She looked rather disappointed that the victim had been found, she had been hoping that the motor home would be leaving soon on a road trip and Mr. Grumpy would fall out onto a major highway and be lost forever as Road Kill! Investigators have now link Ms. Pearl to the disappearance of Mr. Sleepy, who has been missing for several weeks... Bloodhounds are being called in to search for Mr. Sleepy, although it is doubtful that he will be found alive. Ms. Pearl will remain in the custody of her foster parents and will undergo psycho-therapy in the next several weeks. All of her other stuffed toys will be kept safely in a closet until the motive of her actions can be determined! Stay tuned for further updates!

UPDATE 5/13: Foster mom Becky reports: "A new Pearl update...we have been leaving her out of her crate at night and she's doing great. She sleeps on the doggie bed up in the loft by our bedroom...sleeps through the night, no accidents. She will still go in her crate to sleep if asked, but we just wanted to see how she'd do when left out all night long."

UPDATE 6/01: Pearl continues to blossom in Becky and Phil's care. She is a full fledged member of the household and rarely spends time in her crate anymore. According to Becky, " She loves being out at night (not in her crate) and has been really good. Now she runs upstairs and hides on me at night so I won't put her in her crate! Oh, and if she's the only one downstairs, now she sleeps on the sofa...stretches right out...it's very funny. I love it because I think she sees our kids doing it and I think that she's a little afraid to do it but is becoming more comfortable in the house and on the furniture! Does my heart good to see a dog that was left in the back yard all of her life, to finally enjoy being an inside dog and all of the perks!"

I wasn't sleeping on the bed in the guest room ... you must be seeing a ghost!

Pearl discovers her foster mom's wing back chair

UPDATE 8/3: Pearl's foster mom reports: We have been having trouble with a new family who has moved in down the street. The daughter has her friends over at all hours of the day/night...they come in droves, leave beer cans and bottles in the park by our house and in our yards, trash, ...and have total disrespect for all of us. Phil has tried to talk to them and treat them as adults but Friday night it all came to a head. Phil called Metro (police) and had them come, they arrested a lot of under age kids who are drinking and many of them have been in trouble before, the cops knew just about all of them. While all of this was going on, Phil was walking Pearl through the park watching the events unfold (at 2 am) and apparently one of the kids from the party took off running from the cops. He thought he would be a smart "A" and try to assault Phil. He ran towards Phil and Phil told him to stop and Pearl stood her ground and was right beside Phil and was staring down the kid...he saw Pearl and stopped!! Phil was very proud that she didn't bark/snarl and she wasn't afraid! GOOD GIRL, PEARL!!!

Shhhhh! You'll wake the baby.
