JULIET

On September 4th, we received an email from our westside volunteer friend, Trish, that the westside shelter was overflowing with German Shepherds. Two were Bud & Lou (pulled by us that week), and one was a "1 year old" white that had come in as a stray with a buddy, a black & cream. The shelter was going to allow them the 72 hour hold and then would split them up for adoption...or worse.

After 72 hours, the dogs were evaluated to see whether they could be placed on the adoption floor. This is the part we hate the worst -- the shelter's evaluation. Juliet failed her evaluation because she tried to put her mouth on the evaluator while he was pinching her toes. I guess you have to tolerate the pain, no matter how frightened you are or how hard the pinch, in order to be considered "adoptable." Thankfully, we decided to do our own evaluation on Juliet, and found a very scared girl who had been beside herself after being separated from the shepherd she had come in with.

We pulled Juliet immediately and transported her to a boarding facility until a foster home opened up for her.

UPDATE 9/21: A foster spot has opened up for Juliet and she was moved into a home today. She's doing well and making friends very quickly. She was cat tested and did very well -- she sniffed, the cat hissed, and Juliet walked away. We'll be doing further testing. She seems fine with the other (boy) dogs in the household, but is not too fond of the puppies -- she seems to be afraid of them!

Juliet on the move

Juliet will be started on a precautionary 30 day course of antibiotics (she came into the shelter with ticks and was running a slight fever at her vet check on 9/28), and will then be scheduled for her spay surgery. She's in good weight and her spirits are getting higher every day. She's probably older than the year the shelter placed her at, but we'll let our vet make the final determination when Juliet sees him for her spay surgery.

UPDATE 11/5: For lack of foster space, after a thorough checkup at our vet, Juliet was moved to Pete & Mac's this afternoon for 2 weeks of fun and games, after which she will be spayed.

UPDATE 11/29: In preparation for her spay surgery, Juliet was moved to the home of one of our staff members. Unfortunately, before she could take her turn at the vet's, she came into season. Spay surgery will have to be postponed until after Christmas, but Juliet doesn't seem to mind. She's having fun playing with the other dogs and getting ready for the holidays. She's an energetic goofball who's willing to be active or lazy, depending on what her person wants to do for that day. She just wants to be near you and to please you.

Juliet is in desperate need of a foster home. Can you help her?

UPDATE 12/13: For lack of a foster home, Juliet was moved to Canine Country Club this afternoon. If you are interested in providing a foster (or foster-to-adopt) home for Juliet for the holidays, please fill out the Prospective Adopter's Questionnaire at the link below and email Nancy.

UPDATE 12/20: We were disappointed that we had fallen short of our goal to have all of our furkids in homes before Christmas. As of December 19th, Juliet was still in boarding. But our Christmas Angel didn't let us down:

Thanks to Karry and David (and Ranger, too, of course), Juliet has a foster home for the holidays!

Are those presents for me?

First it's off to check out the park with dad...then a snooze with baby brother Ranger

Juliet will be spayed in early January and will then be available for introductions in the New Year, after a brief recovery period. Foster mom Karry is an avid picture taker, so please check back for photos and updates as Juliet acclimates herself to her new digs.

I love you...ya know?

UPDATE 12/25: Unfortunately, in spite of all the good reports we have been receiving, Juliet is being returned to Canine Country Club tomorrow. Juliet lived successfully (being crated when necessary) in a multi-dog foster home since being rescued (up to her placement at Canine Country Club the week before Christmas). We're guessing that she simply has decided that she enjoys her freedom too much, and bonded very quickly with her new foster mom, and Juliet will not be crated in her new foster home while her foster folks are away. This comes as a surprise to her former foster mom, who will be working with Juliet as soon as a spot opens up at her home to make sure Juliet feels safe and secure in a crate as she did previously. We are disappointed beyond words that this has not proven to be Juliet's forever home but are thankful that she at least had a home for Christmas.

UPDATE 2/14: Juliet is scheduled for a dental and spay surgery on Friday. She will be moved to a temporary foster home for recuperation and will then be available for introductions.

UPDATE 2/18: Juliet had her dental and spay surgery today. We were pleasantly surprised when the vet found beautiful white molars under the tartar -- no extractions (as we had feared) necessary! Juliet will be recuperating with a staff member for the next week to 10 days and will then be available for introductions.

UPDATE 3/2: Juliet has completely recovered from her spay surgery and the "cone of shame" has been removed. The good news is that Juliet's ears came up! We have been seeing her ears up for the past week with the cone giving them added support. When the cone was removed today, voila! Standing ears! Whether they will stay up is anyone's guess but, for at least today, they are standing tall.

Pretty girl

Juliet will be taking her turn at Dog House Training Academy in the next week or two.

UPDATE 3/12: Juliet checked into The Dog House this afternoon, and training began immediately.

Baby Axel wants to help ...

... Juliet is fine with a hug

TRAINING UPDATE 3/14: "Juliet is doing very well with her training, not so much in her crate. She doesn't break out, but she is NOT happy if we're not in the room with her. Working on it :) but her training is coming along great!"

TRAINING UPDATE 3/16: "Juliet's lightbulb has come on! :) I started her off on a prong, and she now walks well and performs all of her tasks with just a martingale. Her eye contact has improved tremendously, and she's finally "got it" that I am of importance. She still barks just a bit when she first comes into her crate from outside, but now just one "quiet!" And she shuts right up. She seems food motivated now, where as before she was too distracted and couldn't care less. She's super sweet, and now that she's finally wanting to please, I'm sure she will make someone a great dog!"

UPDATE 3/24: Juliet was the center of attention today at Dog House Training Academy's beginner class.

UPDATE 4/3: Juliet has returned from 2 weeks of private training at The Dog House. Her focus is much improved, as is her obedience, and she's settling right back into the routine at her foster home with one of our staff members. She settles right in to her crate in the common area of the house and, although it's not her favorite place to be, she is quiet and content to be crated until it's her turn in the yard.

Juliet would love a foster or an adoptive home to call her own. Her adoption fee will include a training session with Leah of Dog House Training Academy so that Leah can show you what Juliet has learned.

Adoption fee $325.00.
