STAR

Many dogs are being transported from the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, and we have been asked to help with the 2 white GSDs that are among these dogs. How could we say no?

Star blinked for her "before" picture, so we tried again

Judy was moved in with Foster Mom Dorothy. Even though we do not have a foster home for her, we could not bear to turn Star away and so she has been temporarily moved in with a staff member until a foster home can be found for her.

Star seems to be in very good condition. She is happy and outgoing and, while she gave her temporary foster home residents (the 4-footed ones) a hard time upon arrival last night, after a good night's sleep she's doing just fine with everyone. She appears to be crate trained and is settling in very nicely.
After a bath, Star is ready to play

Star sees an unguarded slipper...

...she's got it and is off...

...to hide in her crate where she thinks she's invisible
Star in a nutshell:
Medium sized girl; probably younger than the 12 months the shelter said she was
Outgoing and social
Judy's daughter, so definitely a shepherd mix
Appears to be crate trained
Cautious with other dogs, but no problems
Needs ongoing socialization and training
Up-to-date on shots
Star will be spayed and microchipped prior to adoption

UPDATE 9/28:Star came out to Boot Camp tonight to meet the gang. She did beautifully with all the other dogs and people -- no hesitation at all in meeting everyone -- and best of all, she found herself a foster home. Thanks to Wendy, Doug and, of course, Gina for taking this little girl on.

We're going to let Star settle in for a bit and then schedule her spay surgery, after which she will be available for introductions and adoption. Please check back for updates from Doug & Wendy.

FOSTER UPDATE 9/30: It's been an interesting couple of days. (Star) and Gina are getting along well and Gina probably hasn't had this much exercise in years - she and Star are chasing around the yard, jumping into and out of the fountain and generally creating mayhem. Star is crating well, no accidents in the house, plays well with her new toys and is eating like a horse. We noticed one incidence of food aggression when we got home on Sunday night but nothing since - she and Gina drink out of the same bowl (at the same time no less) and have been sharing rawhide bones - someone has taught Star to steal slippers and she in turn has taught Gina to do the same. We are working on "puppy proofing" the house. We are working on "off" as she has no hesitation in jumping on furniture and/or people. That's all for now, more later and some pictures if I can get her to sit still long enough.

FOSTER UPDATE 10/5:I finally got Star to sit still long enough for a couple of pictures – it doesn’t happen often so enjoy them. She and Gina seem to be getting along well which was our main concern given their respective ages. When Star gets to be too much, Gina just puts a paw on Star’s shoulders and down she goes – that lasts about 30 seconds and then Star is back on her feet and ready to go again. She is eating well, balks a bit when its time to crate but settles down quickly once she’s in. We took her for her (probably) first walk on Monday and it was obvious that she hasn’t been on a leash often.

We're going to give Star a couple of weeks to settle in and then schedule her spay surgery. She is up-to-date on shots and will be microchipped at Boot Camp this weekend.

UPDATE 10/19: Star came out to Boot Camp again this weekend and what a change! You can tell her foster folks have been working with her. She's definitely learned some leash manners but is still quite the puppy. Her spay surgery is scheduled for the 29th, after which she will be available for adoption.

Adoption fee $165.00.
