FONZI

Look at this cute guy Nicki pulled out of the shelter yesterday! He's two or under and in temporary foster care in Tucson. Doesn't he just look like he's waiting for a hug?

He'll get plenty of those where he is compliments of fosters Nancy & Carl. Please check back for his 1st update......

UPDATE 9/20: We don't have a lot of info yet...Fonzi was a stray picked up at a cemetery. His fosters feel he was an outside dog, he's sniffs EVERYTHING in the house with a healthy curiosity. He's friendly and active despite just having been neutered this past Wednesday. He had spent three weeks in the shelter so he had ample time to store energy. He crated well, without protest his first two nights. We're still in the process of gradually introducing him to the other five dogs in his foster home. Fonzi will have an opportunity to meet small children..plenty of grandkids to test him with and walks so we'll know more about his leash manners as well.

We will post his next foster report when we receive it.

FOSTER REPORT /22: "Fonzi loves walks, and is doing pretty well, doesn't mind NOT being in the lead when we have a couple ahead of him. Does listen when you correct him, he is "ripe" for training. Chasing tennis balls is a super fun thing for him...he is fast! He can really fly along. He does "eye" the pool a lot and we feel sure he will try to swim when it is safe for him to be in the water, Fonzi is a busy guy and likes activity, walks, balls and maybe swimming are all right up his alley. A very patient guy, but not what we would call calm. Has been very good about not using the house as a place to relieve himself, until yesterday and he did mark twice. We have been watching carefully to avoid a repeat performance. He is smaller than most of the males we have fostered, so he is easier to handle/walk and teach! YEA!

The one thing we can see insofar as he was just neutered recently, he still thinks he is a very romantic guy. He is always smelling and checking out the "girls" in our household, which is not an activity they especially like! We think he will not be so interested in them in due time. He seems to be pretty good with our shepherds, we are still working on our two mixed breeds to be more friendly (1a male and 1 female) with him. They do not like Fonzi's sniffing of them, so we have been watching closely. As many fosters as we have had, we know you can't rush this "friend" thing too fast.

Anyway, we are doing ok, have been trying to work with Fonzi as much as we can. He is doing better about "sit" and tries to give you his paw to shake, too. Think he is a fast learner and he does pay attention to you, he is definitely NOT aggressive, one of his plusses! Don't think he has had very much "instruction" along the way More later. Nancy and Carl"

Sounds like the Fonz is yet another previously backyard dog with a nice temperament and who just needs his basic training, house manners and social skills. We would like to get him fostered in Phoenix and give him an opportunity to focus more on his human rather than canine friends. FOSTER UPDATE 9/29: Hi Stefany, bet you are wondering how we are doing with Fonz, quite well actually! He is really a very quick learner--this boy WANTS to do what YOU ask! He definitely knows his name (now- you call and he is there! On our walks, he is doing sooo well, he adapts to corrections easily, and because of his lighter/smaller size I am able to control behavior that is not desirable. Gosh, he is making so much headway and the improvements are great! We make quite a statement in the mornings walking with our two female shepherds and Fonzi; people are frequently stopping us to tell us "how beautiful they are"! (

He does well with the girl shepherds (4) and is not smelling so much which they like! He does want to play with our coated shepherd quite a bit, she is probably about his age and energy level. A couple of things he does is cute, loves to lay on his back with all fours up in the air, to sleep, also when he is laying down on the floor or carpet he almost always crosses his front paws on top of each other. He has our routines memorized already, listens to every word you say, he is smart.

Say, come to get in the crate and he is there! He knows what we do and anticipates the rest. Have not noticed anymore marking inside the house. Uses the doggie door with ease. He really is shaping up fast. Not having any major problems, and his progress is marvelous! Loves his food, and is putting it away, quite well, ha! Still quite lean, but, not as bony as he was 10 days ago. Loves attention and likes it best when he can be by your side. Outside is OK BUT not when you can go into the house and be with people. Oh yes, on our walks, he is fine with people and dogs behind fences but, loose dogs may be another thing! The other day we were walking in an alley and surprised by a man and his Pit Bull; there was no way for us to avoid them (we were probably within two feet of them) Fonzi did not like it! Thank heavens the Pit Bull did not lunge. All turned out well. He is fine if we stop to talk with neighbors along the way, though. Doing well, here! Nancy and Carl
