DAKOTA

Dakota is a sweet, loving gal, outgoing and affectionate. She is obedience trained, house trained, and good with other dogs although she merely tolerates smaller dogs. She's good with kids, has never met a cat and friendly with strangers. She is fairly well socialized which is somewhat negated by the fact that she spends a lot of time outside in a run. WHY?

Dakota is a high strung, hyperactive dog easily over stimulated. She is often relegated to the run in the yard because her perpetual motion is disturbing to her busy family. She will constantly run in and out of the dog door, chase shadows and reflections and bark at anything flying overhead. We rarely describe a GSD as hyperactive..Border Collies, yes, GSDs however, are more likely to be referred to as high drive and/or high energy. Needless to say, keeping her confined and bored in addition to being outside and often isolated from her pack, only leads to more frustration and stored energy. Not being allowed to relieve herself in the grass makes it her favorite place to dig.

She is slight of build, a little on the thin side; she's been tested for anything medically based and the concessus is that she's just constantly burning energy. Mom runs two miles with her several times a week after which Dakota is ready for lots more.

Here's what we think she needs: A fun job to redirect her overactive brain, such as herding and/or agility. Hiking; long hikes with inclines. An owner who has LOTS of time to spend engaging her, one who is very calm by nature and who is not overly emotional. Experience with German Shepherds and dog related pursuits would be best.

Yes, Dakota is always on the move but adequate mental stimulation will be just as effective and important as physical activity. While her nerve and low threshold would preclude her from something like Search and Rescue, which requires excellent focus, playing "go find" games, when indoors will keep her more occupied. Teaching her to do useful things like putting toys in a box, daily swimming, variable surface tracking and frequent walks will all serve to satisfy her thirst for action; she needs a job but it must be a labor of love.

Her issue is genetically based; in the right setting she will be a calmer dog yet she will always have the same needs. Busy families with lots on their plate is what she already has...a mostly at-home-buddy with an active life style that includes Dakota..one who takes their companion everywhere with them, will make for a much happier dog...and owner.

Dakota is crate trained, spayed, current with shots and loves to swim. She must be a full time indoor dog and would love to be able to do some running free in a safe environment. Dakota was born on August 12, 2005.

**** COME MEET ME AT THE KACHINA SHOW ON SATURDAY AT 2PM ****

UPDATE 4/8: Dakota paid us a visit at the Kachina Show and was surprisingly calm and very well behaved. She happily greeted strangers and was comfortable with lots of other dogs and smells all around. Seems our gal is just glad to be a part of whatever you are doing. We're hoping she can spend time with us again at the K9 trials.

Adoption fee $295.00.
